Deacon Charles Andrew Ross, 92, of Barrington, passed from labor to reward on Sunday, April 23th,  while in the care of the Hope Hospice & Palliative Care RI.  Deacon Ross was born on February 2, 1925 in Providence the late Charles E. and Mary A. (Williams) Ross.  The youngest of four children and the last living survivor.

“Charlie”, as he was popularly known, was educated through the Providence Public School system.  He served in the United States Navy in World War II from January 13, 1943 through November 16, 1945.

On December 3, 1949, he married the love of his life, the former Thelma Jacks.  They were married for 67 years.  From this union one son, David, was born.

Olney Street Baptist Church was an integral part of Deacon Ross’s life. He was baptized into the fellowship of the church at the age of 12 under the pastorate of Reverend R.A. Batts, and served the church faithfully for 80 years.

During his life time, Deacon Ross served the church in a variety of positions, namely: The Trustee Ministry, the Ushers Ministry, Christian Education Ministry and Sunday school Teacher.

He became a “walking deacon” in 1966 and was ordained into the Deacon Ministry on September 21, 1969, during the pastorate of the late Reverend Dr. Paul F. Thompson.  He was elected chairman of the Deacon Ministry in January, 1973.  After serving meritoriously for many years, he was granted the status of Deacon Emeritus.  Deacon Ross will always be remembered as a dedicated servant to Jesus Christ, who was the center of his life, as exemplified by his dedication to Mid-Week Prayer Service and Bible Study and most especially to the teaching of the Gospel at Sunday school.

Besides his wife, Deacon Ross is survived by son, David Ross (Beverly), two grandchildren, Jamaal and Sebrina Ross, many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.  He was the brother of the late Harriet Ross, Herbert "Buster" Ross and Walter Ross.
