Welcome to the memorial page for

Devin Roshawn Burney

June 19, 1995 ~ July 1, 2017 (age 22) 22 Years Old

Devin Roshawn Burney, a former William Floyd High School basketball star passed from this life on July 1, 2017.  Devin was born on June 19, 1995 in Providence, RI, the son of Shawndell Burney and Ronald Hopkins.  He was 22 years young.  Devin was an amazing young man and athletic scholar.  He attended private and charter schools until he relocated to Shirley, New York on Long Island in August 2010.  Devin’s greatest joy was spending quality time with his siblings, cousins, and close friends.

Devin was an avid lover of sports; he was practically born with a ball in his hand.  During Devin’s young life he played on numerous organized sports teams.  He played flag football with the West Elmwood Intruders and would later go on to play as a member of the Eagles Pop Warner football team.  Devin joined the St. Michaels CYO basketball team where he was a leading scorer that led the team to the New England Tournament Championship Title.  He continued to improve his gift by playing basketball with AAU teams and the Providence Department of Recreation.

Devin started his high school education at St. Raphael Academy, but later moved to Shirley, New York. There he navigated the William Floyd basketball team to a victory at the 2012 Suffolk Class AA championship.  He also played on a team of Long Island high school standouts that won the gold medal at the 2011 BCANY Summer Games in Johnson City, upstate New York. Devin ranked #45 as a top player in New York State, one of his many basketball achievements.

Devin graduated from William Floyd High School in 2013.  After being accepted to a number of SUNY schools in New York, he decided to pursue a degree in business management at Johnson and Wales University.  Devin had aspirations of being an entrepreneur in sports management, his true passion.

Devin was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Albert Burney Sr of Somerset, Bermuda, and his beloved uncle Albert M. Burney Jr (BJ) of Providence, RI; paternal grandparents Ronald Lewis and Dawn Hopkins of Providence, RI; maternal great grandparents Harriet and Aaron Isom,  Erma and Irving Burney of Providence, RI.

Devin leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving sister Daveena Burney, brother Dajuan Ives, and stepfather Robert Andrew Speaks all of Providence, RI; Chaunsamae Summers, Cherrahn Summers, Kahtero Summers, of PA, his maternal grandmother Sharon Burney-Wright (Jeffrey Wright) of Providence, RI; his (Auntie-Ma) Linda Coleman and Uncle Kevin J. Coleman Sr, cousins Danielle Burney, Maya Coleman, Mikayla Coleman, and Kevin J. Coleman II of Shirley, Long Island New York; a Godbrother Trayquan Mitchell of Providence, RI; paternal aunts Megan Hopkins, Jackie Collins, and Keisha Hazard all of Providence, RI; companion Ariana Wilcox of Providence, RI; and a host of relatives and friends.

Devin will be greatly missed and treasured always by all who knew him.  His infectious smile and sense of humor will live in our hearts forever
