John Saunders Carroll, 87, of California Avenue, Providence passed away peacefully from heart failure on Saturday, March 15th, at Miriam Hospital. He was the husband of Daisy V. (Vanhoozer) Carroll.
Born in Herndon, WV, son of the late Myrtle Havens. Besides his wife, John is survived by sons, John K. Carroll, David K. Carroll, Anthony K. Carroll and Charles K. Carroll, all of Rhode Island , brother, Donald Havens of West Virginia, sister, Josephine Gibson of Georgia , grandson, Anthony Carroll of Barrington, and great, granddaughters, Alexandra Carroll and Victoria Carroll, both of Barrington.
John served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945, serving in combat in Germany with the 97th Infantry Division, in action from Belguim through Germany. He was with one unit which found one of the concentration camps at Flossenburg, Bavaria, liberating the persons in that camp. Upon the 7th of May, the 97th Infantry Division was sent back to the United States to prepare for the invasion of Japan. His unit helped destroy Japanese surrendered weapons of the Japanese military. He did some occupational duty, then mustered out of the U.S. Army in 1945. He reenlisted into the U.S. Army and served with the U.S. Army CID, serving in the railroad security forces. He then mustered out of the U.S. Army in 1948. Mr. Carroll was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, one Bronze Star, Expert Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, ETO Ribbon, APTO Ribbon, and he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
John then returned to the lumber industry working at the JB Belcher Co. He then married and relocated to Rhode Island in 1951. He worked for the L. Vaughn Co. for 38 years. He was a member of the carpenter's union. a charter member of Local 3086 and Local 94.
Mr. Carroll enjoyed sports, flying model airplanes and watching football games.
Funeral arrangements will be private. Burial, with military honors, will be Wednesday, March 19th, at 11am in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Click To View Condolence Messages
