Lessie (Spruill) Smith, 82, a retired nurses aide at the RI Medical Center, of Congress Avenue, Providence, died Friday, June 20th, at home. She was the widow of the late James A. Smith. Born in Columbus, MS, a daughter of the late Governor Spruill and Lelia (Benton) Spruill. She had been a resident of the city for 50 years. She is survived by sons, Donald Smith of Bensonville, IL and Billy A. Smith of Providence, daughters, Vickie Ezikpe of Cranston and Kathleen Smith of Atlanta, GA, brothers, O'Ray Spruill of Chicago, IL, Willie Bob Spruill of Mansfield, OH and Carnell Spruill of Detroit, MI, sisters, Seretha Johnson of Columbus, MS and Dorothy Harris of Chicago, IL, 11 grandchildren and 13 great, grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Elvira Smith and sister of the late O.C. Spruill, Ervin Spruill, Henry Spruill, Robbie Hodges, Flossie Lee, Tommie Gibson, Izola Foster and Arlee Childs. Viewing/Visitation 10am to 12 Noon Friday, June 27th at Bright Funeral Home, 290 Public Street, Providence. Burial will immediately follow at Oakland Cemetery, Cranston.
