Helen May Washington was born on May 21, 1915 in Providence, Rhode Island and went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 8, 2008. She was the daughter of Luke Alexander Pressley and Virginia Gabriella Spurlock Pressley who were both originally from Virginia.
In her early years she attended Union Baptist Church that later merged with Sheldon Street Congregational Church. She faithfully raised all of her children in the ways of the Lord - at home, at Sunday School and church, and by her excellent example in daily life. She served as church clerk and over many years was prayer partner with her friend Rev. Naomi Craig.
She instilled in her children a love for God, life, learning, nature, and the out-of-doors. All of these values had been passed on to her by her own mother who was of Native American, Cherokee Indian descent. She was a life-long avid reader who read the Bible through a number of times over, and regularly took her children to the library. She also encouraged her children to explore and develop their gifts, interests, abilities and God-given potential.
Her enthusiasm for life, her sense of humor, her love of reading and her warm hospitality, love and care to those she encountered in the flow of life endeared her to many. She enjoyed crocheting and giving out thoughtful gifts, words, deeds, and hugs that were fitting to all occasions, and, just out of a kind heart - at any time - as a surprise, just to celebrate a moment in time.
Helen May Washington loved to sing and quote poetry, and encouraged others to join her in impromptu expressions of music, art and worship.
She is deeply endeared in memory in the hearts of many friends, neighbors, church members and relatives including:
Sons: Charles E. L. Washington of Pasadena, California;
Bernard D. Washington of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania;
Raymond G. Washington of Providence, Rhode Island;
Daughters: Barbara W. Rogers of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania;
Virginia May Love of Providence, Rhode Island
11 grandchildren; 8 great, grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild. She was wife of the late Booker T. Washington Sr., mother of the late Booker T. Washington, Jr. and sister of the late Viola Champlin and Louisa Pressley.
