Dorlean “Ms. Dora” Sumner, 92, of Providence was called home on Saturday August 27th, 2022.
Dorlean “Ms. Dora” Sumner was born on October 12, 1929, in York, South Carolina to Assie and Archie Robins. Dorlean worked as a nurse and caretaker for her entire career. She married her husband, Roger Leroy Sumner, on September 25th, 1958. They welcomed eight children. Dorlean was the sister of the late Jero Cole and Rose Walker.
Dorlean’s death is preceded by her husband; Roger Leroy Sumner, and three children: Jero Sumner, Nicole Walker, and James Sumner. Dorlean is survived by five children: Roger Leroy Sumner Jr., Robert Sumner, Vivian Sumner, Doris Ann Sumner, and Antonia Sumner. Dorlean was the grandmother to sixteen grandchildren and the great-grandmother of thirty-two great-grandchildren. In addition, she was the godmother of Jimmy James Smith and Douglas Denson as well as the bonus mother to many others from the Dudley Street area in Providence.
The absence of her spitfire sense of humor, boundless wisdom, and unwavering love will be greatly missed by many.
